How does a single parent give a gift of reading, particularly when he/she does not live with that child? Read Yourself Let your child see you reading. If he/she can't see you in person, send a photo of you reading in the backyard or in your favorite chair. Give Books Give books whenever you can. If a bookcase is not a part of your child's room at home, add that bookcase soon. Start a Library Garage sales are great places to pick up children's books. Often you can buy a whole box of books for your child. Split them between the two homes your child occupies. Maybe even switch them from time-to time. Single Parents' BooksIf you are good at story telling, write a story, then type it on your computer. Leave blank areas or pages for your child to illustrate the book. If you can not imagine a story, take one from real life. All children appreciate a story that starts with, "I remember when you were little and..." Record a Book Send your child a book you have read into a cassette. It will be the sound of your voice and the love of reading all rolled into one. After you have recorded the book, send the book and the recording in one package. Even when your child reads, this is still a good way to stay in touch. |
