Single Parents Dining Out with Kids. Dining out with your children can be a fun-filled experience. It can also be part of the socialization and child manner-building process single parents are expected to perform. It can just as easily be a nightmare. Try these four suggestions for a more pleasant dining experience. 1. Keep it short. Children do not have a long attention span. Ask your waiter which menu items are quickly prepared. Choose your meal from these items. 2. Start it early. Take children out-to-eat early in the evening when they are less likely to be tired and irritable. 3. Keep it supervised. If you have ever eaten in a restaurant with unattended children wandering by, you know that children should be supervised in a restaurant--even yours! Don't give in to whining and pleading to let them up from the table while you enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee with a friend or potential special person. The other patrons are probably not as relaxed as you are!! 4. Plan ahead. Take along coloring books or something to keep children entertained that is appropriate to their age. Even your laptop computer if that is what it takes!!
