Not every single parent is creative. That said, most of us like to give gifts
that are appreciated and many of us need to save money, particularly at an
extensive, expensive gift time such as Christmas.
Start a Photo Album as a Gift for Your
Child
You don't have to do the entire album. Just a few special pages is
enough for a growing gift. Give a few more pages next year. It is fun
to include a few of your kids' baby pictures and other pictures from the
past--even a few ancestors.
Birthday or Holiday Book for a Child's Gift
The website CyberParent made this one easy for any single parent. Print out a few appropriate pages here,
then paste them in a scrapbook with a few photos and a few blank pages for the
gift recipient's additions. You have the perfect gift for a child.
Gift Calendar from a Single Parent
Collect your family birthdays, anniversaries, and other special
days. Also find out your child's friend's birthdays and his/her school holidays,
if you can. Your computer has a program to create a calendar. Print calendars with
those special dates filled-in. You can have this gift calendar bound at the local
office supply store for a nominal charge. This is a welcome gift and... it is a
gift that can be repeated next year!
The Growing Gift from a Single Parent
If you child has a growing green thumb, present him or her with a growing
gift.
1. Start a plant from one of your own, rooting it far enough ahead of time
to be established by gift time. Put it in an interesting container--maybe a gift
from a second-hand or thrift store. Type the care instructions to go with it
from your computer.
2. Give two vegetable plants in late spring for a summer of
"good eating." After all, any good single parent wants kids to
eat their veggies!
3. Find inexpensive strawberry pots (second-hand stores or close-outs) and
fill with strawberry plants or flowering plants. Another beautiful gift.
Single Family and Single Parent Recipes
This may sound strange for a child. Remember that all but the youngest
child can prepare a meal. Start a collection of recipes focusing on a special interest. Print them from
your computer on card stock or glue them to an index card. Buy or make an inexpensive recipe card box
to hold them. Or, buy a small 3-ring index binder to hold your gift of recipes.
You can add recipes at other gift occasions and the recipe collections will
change as the child grows..
