Contra dancing is folk dancing based in the English and Celtic traditions with an input from France along the way. Contras are usually done with partners across from each other in long lines. This is a good dance form for singles because:

A dancer and his or her partner dance a series of figures, or moves, with each other and with another couple for a short time. They then repeat the same figures with another couple, and so on.
Many people come to
dance without any partner and find partners at the dance. In fact, contra dance is one of the few dance forms where
you will usually dance with everyone by the end of the evening. Basic instruction is normally offered just before the dance. In addition, first-time dancers find experienced dancers extremely friendly and helpful. |

Contra dancers do not wear
any particular style of clothes and dress is casual. Sports shoes can be
worn by the first-time dancer. Don't wear shoes that could fly off,
