Contra dancing is folk dancing based in the English and Celtic traditions with an input from France along the way.

Contras are usually done with partners across from each other in long lines.

This is a good dance form for singles because:

  • No partners are needed.

  • Everyone is encouraged to change partners for each dance.

  • No experience is needed.

In addition:

  • Dancers generally walk through every dance before doing it to the music.

  • All dances use live music

  • Most are open to the public.

Contras are usually done with partners across from each other in long lines. Unlike square dancing, no experience is needed.

A dancer and his or her partner dance a series of figures, or moves, with each other and with another couple for a short time. They then repeat the same figures with another couple, and so on.

Many people come to dance without any partner and find partners at the dance. In fact, contra dance is one of the few dance forms where you will usually dance with everyone by the end of the evening.

A caller, usually working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. This gives everyone an idea of what to expect so the movements can be easily executed. The caller leads the dances while they are being done to music, so dancers are able to perform each movement to the music.

Basic instruction is normally  offered just before the dance. In addition, first-time dancers find experienced dancers extremely friendly and helpful.

Contra dancers do not wear any particular style of clothes and dress is casual.  Sports shoes can be worn by the first-time dancer. Don't wear shoes that could fly off, though.

Although contra dancing is fairly fast-paced and active, dancers do not need to be in athletic shape to participate.
