What is it?

"Ballroom dancing" originally referred to dances done in a ballroom. Unfortunately, the types of dances done in ballrooms change with the times. The eighteenth century minuet was replaced by the nineteenth century waltz and polka which were joined by the twentieth century fox-trot, tango, Lindy, and others.

With the development of rock-and-roll after the second world war, "touch" dancing in general went into a decline. At this time, the term "ballroom" dancing came to be used to identify traditional "touch" dancing.

For purposes of this article, however, ballroom dancing will mean the waltz, the fox-trot, swing, and the various Latin dances.

Dancing and Gender.

Most women love to dance. Many men feel silly dancing so most women do not have dance partners.

A word to the wise man: learning to dance makes it much easier for you to meet women. In fact, you will have a extensive choice of women of any age if you realize that you do not look silly dancing and learn to ballroom dance. Besides, who cares what you look like with that far-reaching choice of lovely dance partners?

Where to Learn.

Ballroom dancing requires a teacher and practice. Your first goal is to move as one with a partner in a smooth relaxed motion across the floor. Until this is achieve (and it does take some practice), the more difficult figures should be avoided.

Consider private lessons. You can benefit from private lessons in ballroom dancing more than any other form of social dancing.

Caution: Beware of any company that will not give you prices over the telephone, however. You will probably be in a for a hard sale and an expensive contract--even if the company lures you in with a "free" lesson.

Where to Dance.

Ballroom dancing is good exercise, good fun, and something you can use and do throughout your life.

There is one major problem facing ballroom dancers: this form of dance requires a large dance floor and good music. This is not always feasible for owners of bars and lounges who have found rock, country, swing, and alternative music and/or dance to sell more drinks, often in less space.

Therefore, if you want to pursue ballroom dancing in your area, try private dances or look in the week-end guide in larger newspapers.
