Use dancing as a cure for loneliness. 

Good idea. But what kind of dancing?

The most universal form of dancing (besides social dancing or just moving to the music)  for the United States seems to be County and Western.

It was Texas honky-tonks and roadhouses that put country music on the map during the depression. Country music exploded during the 40s. Lonely troops and their movements spread this music throughout the nation.

The kicking and hopping dances that accompanied country music acquired the name "kicker dance." These dances also spread nationwide from Texas military bases.

Although the small country honky-tonks and roadhouses continue today, monstrous country and western halls commercialized the C & W dance craze.

And for singles everywhere, this combines comfortable western attire, old-west manners, a relaxed atmosphere for singles meeting singles, and a bridge for romance!

If you are in a metro area or live near a C & W dance hall, be aware that many offer free lessons. Private lessons are also available in some areas.

The usual word of caution for private lessons: Get prices over the phone or prepare yourself for a potential hard sell and a high-priced contract when you do show up for those lessons.

What if no lessons are available near you? 

Get a video and teach yourself--this works for remote areas and for singles who want to learn in the privacy of their own home.  You can learn to line dance alone before you even go to a dance hall.

Then drive to the nearest C & W dance hall to practice and meet singles. 

Videos also work if you are not comfortable learning in front of a crowd. At least learn a line dance or two before heading out for lessons in the public. 

Also, line dancing can be done without a partner. Another good thing when you are single and looking to make friends.
