We ask ourselves: What is self-esteem?
The definition is Opinions and feelings of self-worth stemming from the individual's positive or negative beliefs about being worthy, valuable and capable. In psychology, self-esteem or self-worth includes a person's subjective appraisal of himself or herself as intrinsically positive or negative to some degree (Sedikides & Gregg, 2003).
It also involves the emotions those thoughts bring to your mind:
The emotions also transfer into your behavior:
Finally, self-esteem can be specific to a particular dimension (e.g., "I believe I am a good writer, and feel proud of that in particular") or global in extent (e.g., "I believe I am a good person, and feel proud of myself in general"). Self-esteem can be general such as the person who feels he/she is basically a good or worthy person or it can be specific such as a person who thinks he/she is a good artist. In other words, you can think you are a good artist but a bad writer or a good father but a bad husband. |
