Dating for Single Parents

A divorce decree or the death of a spouse does not sever your right and desire to have affection and companionship, plus intimate relations with another when the time is right. Children make exercising those desires more difficult.

If the children alone did not present enough difficulty, there is another consideration for a single parent. That  is the part of your life that can never be totally shared with a new lover--the part that represents a lifetime of commitment and responsibility to the children of a previous marriage.

A divorced or widowed parent, as he/she begins to date and form relationships with the opposite gender, is faced with a multitude of dilemmas and problems that raise countless questions:

When, where, and how should I introduce my new partner to my children?

What effect will this have on my children?

What effect will my children have on my relationship?

What effect will this have on my relationship with my ex- spouse?

Can I get along with my partners' children?

How can I keep peace between all of these players with time remaining for my new partner AND personal time for myself?

What part, if any, should my new partner play with my children?

The list goes on indefinitely.

The first step is to prepare your children.

This starts before you ever start to date. Start now to:

  • Set aside time for a social life.
  • Have private time.
  • Have privacy which includes the right to shut and lock your bedroom door.

Teach your children to respect the privacy of others by example. Knock before entering their room and respect their privacy at all times. Let them know you expect the same from them.
