Dating Seniors and the Meaning of Age

Dating Seniors and Meaning of Age

We often hear someone's claim to his/her own youthfulness and give a quiet chuckle. We totally disagree. They think they look ten years younger than they are; we don't think that at all.

We also meet singles we do think look younger than their age.

What is age?

What do senior singles mean when they use the word "young' or "old?"

Everyone has different ways to judge age, whether it is our own age or the age of another person. A few ways we perceive age or youth are
1. Appearance
2. Energy Level
3. Mind-set
4. Health
5. Actual Number of Birthdays

Appearance
Are they thin or heavy, balding or graying, wrinkled or smooth-skinned? There are many ways of judging age from appearance. Some people look older or younger than their years because of past smoking, sun exposure, surgery, hair color/thinning, or just the luck of the genes. Appearance has nothing to do with their energy level, mind-set, or actual birthdays.

Energy Level
Do they expend large amounts of energy in a day? Do they jog, climb, swim, row, sail, ride, and jump? Do they work long hours, serve on numerous committees, and have the cleanest home? Appearance and mind-set do not relate to energy expenditures.

Mind-Set
Are they open to learning and new ideas? Are they conservative in their thinking? Are they set in their ways? Do they proudly proclaim, "I haven't changed a bit since I was 21 years old."

Those who base age on a young mind-set are looking for someone who is flexible--whose life is fluid and changes with learning and adaptation of new ideas. People can have flexible, young minds while being relatively inactive physically with graying hair and expanding mid-sections.

They can also have any number of youthful traits, but have a very old mind-set.

Health
Are they generally healthy, consumed with allergies, or battling chronic diseases? Are they taking prescription drugs for chronic diseases or conditions? Health often determines energy level and can certainly be reflected in appearance. Yet we all know people with health issues who have very youthful minds and vice versa.

Actual Birthdays
Do actual birthdays add up to 40, 50, 60, 70 or more? And if so, how many is too many?

Age, then, seems to be a matter of opinion--yours.

What determines your idea of youthfulness?
