The secret to getting someone to talk to you is to ask questions that can not be answered by "yes" or "no."

Example: What do you think about...

You can also start a conversation with a compliment--not an obvious compliment, but a more subtle one.

Example: I like that red pin you have on today. My sister has a similar pin she got on her vacation. Where did you get yours?

And remember, asking a question that starts with "why" often puts people on the defensive.

If necessary, think of a list of questions for her, then practice asking them until they sound natural.
